Białowieża National Park is located in the north-eastern part of Poland, in Podlaskie Voivodeship. It covers the central part of Białowieża Forest.
The symbol of the Park is a bison – the largest land mammal in Europe. Białowieża Forest proved to be the last shelter for the lowland bison, and here the process of its restitution, that is, restoration of the species, began. Nowadays, Białowieża Forest is a home to the largest wild population of the bison in the world. In its Polish part it consists of ca. 570 individuals.
